To Make You Feel My Love

Bob Dylan wrote this beautiful song in 1997. Besides his version, “To Make You Feel My Love” has also been covered by many other artists. A few of the more popular recordings are from Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, and Adele.

I think of my kids when I sing “To Make You Feel My Love, because I hear a “Mama Bear” in lines like, There’s nothin’ that I wouldn’t do, go to the ends of the earth for you. I’m sure many of you can relate.

Bob Dylan has a way of painting with words that allows the listener a chance to visualize and relate to his songs in a variety of ways.

Obviously, “To Make You Feel My Love” can be interpreted several ways as well, including as a beautiful love song of devotion between people who love and care for one another.

But, what if the “I” in the song was actually the voice of Jesus?

Many people don’t know this, but Bob Dylan wrote and recorded gospel albums. Within the lyrics of “To Make You Feel My Love” are (what could be) pretty impressive clues from the Bible.

It’s something to consider when you hear lines like, And there is no one there to dry your tears.

Maybe Dylan was referencing Revelation 21:4 which says, He will wipe every tear from your eye?

And the next line? Who else but Jesus could say they would, Hold you for a million years?

You also can’t help but wonder if lines like I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue, I’d go crawlin’ down the avenue might refer to Jesus fasting for 40 days, suffering abuse on the cross, and the painful journey He made to Calvary.

And of course, You ain’t seen nothin’ like me yet might be Dylan’s idea concerning the return of Jesus, and how we will have never seen anything like Him.

Our version of “To Make You Feel My Love” starts with the sounds of wind and rain setting up the first line which says, When the rain is blowin’ in your face. It features performances from an incredible band of musicians including Wally Minko on piano and synthesizers, Matt Bissonette on Bass, Ron Wikso on drums and percussion, and Kurt Griffey on guitars. In my humble opinion, I think their playing is inspired and very moving. I do hope you agree!
